Line boring isn't as easy as it looks, to get right anyway.
In fact its a proper pain in the ass.
Getting a set up good enough to hit within +/- 0.02mm or a thousandth of an inch can be quite a challenge , and after 5 cases or so, mysteriously, it can all change.
Different materials cut differently, sometimes more oval than round, this is our set up,and we always set the bore guage in a setting ring before measurements.
Hopefully bearing manufacturers start making bearings to better tollerances at some point!
This one has had the thrust cut to 20.3mm as @theflatfourworkshop will trim a 2mm oversized thrust bearing to fit the case.

What a difference a few hours can make, if you can find them spare lol.
Rusty bodged manky front end chopped, flip front initial trim to fit done,. doors swapped for less rusty ones with no filler..
Ready for @rottenvwresto to work his magic fitting the replacement frame head, naps hat etc and a few patches, plus us making the flip front removable, then a new paint job, restyle and then of course me building the engine 😬

Stainless exhaust valves, chambers blended, ported, valves unshouded spring heights measured and spring pressures set at 140lbs on the seat.

Managed to finish balancing this 914 crank assembly after the flywheel was skimmed. It was horrendously uneven, now ready to live again.

#Porsche 914 in for a well balanced #2056cc upgrade, and all the usual JS auto tuning magic sprinkles.
This will be similar to the one we built for Salvage Hunters..
With a C25 camshaft, ported heads, 3 angle valve seats, dynamically #balanced crankshaft assembly, balanced pistons and rocker arms, and end to end balanced conrods.
This one is being driven by its French owner to its new home in Spain when it's finished and had a few small test drives.
Today, men did man things, some great friends we have, thanks John and Rob for helping get our new freebies in place, now the balancer has its own dedicated place, a nice stable platform and good use of an old worn out victoria milling machine, converted to house the state of the art Turner Crankshaft balancer we have to dynamically balance crankshaft assemblies.
And our second bridgeport , yes I'm two timing our Bridget now, bridget 1 just couldn't handle me full time so decided to share me with a younger model.
We will have our case boring jig whch we use for opening out cases for larger barrels and pistons, and performing full flow adaptions on both type 1 and 4 cases, which can be both bored on our jig, set up on one bridgeport which will help us move from one job to another quicker.
All this chaos whilst Kerrie has been squirriling away in the assembly room getting on with engine builds..
With Curly starting down in the car workshop from.next month performing all manor of mechanical services from simple brake pads and service work, to removing and refitting engines etc, things are getting quite exciting..

Looks like I've tuned this 1641 on twin kadrons better than I thought, cruising at average 60 real MPH (tyres smaller than stock make the speedo run out, speed taken from sat nav so real speed)
Stopped a couple of times for fuel thinking we would have used a lot more.
I built this motor years ago originally, mildly ported stock heads, stock camshaft, 1.25 ratio rockers,
It always ran rich and was typically poor on fuel,
Had the motor out before our trip, to service and set up on the Stuska Dyno!
It's done us well so far, other than an oil leak.. gosh golly. And starter failing..
This week we have set the balancer back up, as we have 6 crank assemblies to balance, some for customers who are building their own, and some for customers engines we are building.
Phase one of dynamically balancing this scat flanged race crankhaft assembly after clearancing, 90mm crankshaft for some serious power 💪
Lots of small corrections made to get this under 2gm per plane, now to add flywheel, balance, then pulley, balance, then clutch plate and balance.
This way makes sure each item is balanced correctly and enables replacement parts to be balanced before fitting to keep the whole assembly in spec 👌

Neat little tool for setting geometry I bought many years ago now, works for standard and 1.25 ratio rockers and stock to mild lift cams.
Reassembling an engine that had very mismatched deck heights, and rocker geometry was a mile off, had to get some cut to length pushrods as it required slightly longer pushrods than stock.

Just enough wriggle room with these Gene Berg valve springs, hopefully enough distance between retainers and guide.. got that to check/adjust next.
Using the titanium retainers I had lying around to get some more valve train weight down..
Bottom end closed up, and deck heights all adjusted to within a few tenths of a millimeter to achieve equal compresion on all cylinders, that took an age lol, head ccs measured and adjusted equal, compression set at 11.1.
Slowly slowly catch a running monkey 🐒 🤣
Getting on with this mildly modified 1600 motor.
Sorting the horrific aftermarket casting and machining out, and a bit of mild porting, ground the valves, next week we will test the valve springs and set the heights accordingly.
These heads were sold as a pair but were definitely not twins lol.

Mild 1600 motor, will be throwing in a c25 camshaft to help it breath just enough to drag his split around.

Bay type 2.0 4 motor, stock bottom end, with 40IDF carbs amd a lovely CSP Sidewinder exhaust, a few £££ but id say worth the money.
Porsche fan conversion, these make carb linkeages a PITA.
I dont think they are worth the money, especially given they dont cool as well as the stock set up or a DTM conversion.

VW Type 4, 1911cc, webcam 494 camshaft, twin 40 weber IDFs, worked heads with larger valves, heavy duty valve springs, light port work, CSP exhaust, and a horrible porsche fan conversion lol.
As usual its been built after all bearing clearances have been measured, adjusted and set, everything balanced, valve spring heights measured and set, deck heights, CCs and compresion set with cylinders as closely matched as feasible.
Fuel pump oil feed and return tapped and blanked with threaded oil gallery plugs.
Then we had to find a belt that will fit, 28 belts later and this is the best we can do, so if anyone can help with advise, bigger top pulley perhaps?
I was thinking shim the fan up?
Never building a motor with a porsche fan conversion again, DTM all the way..
Now i need to strip the water pump for the stuska dyno and clean it out to get water pressure to run under load and perform some power runs..
Looking forward to see how it performs 🤔

When rebuilding an aircooled engine, especially on a type 4, quite often the oil feed holes dont line up with the bearing hole, so i mark them through the bearing, then with a countersink match them up to make sure they flow oil correctly.
Its all in the details, and usually the ones you don't see😉

Peakaboo #bobhoover crankcase oil mods, oil galery opened up, and camshaft oil grooves widened..
Some say they are pointless and not needed, some swear by them, i say it cant hurt, and ive never seen any negatives from performing them, more efficient oiling and cooling definitely wont hurt. Its a therapeutic job seeing the out of balance numbers, folowed by the nice low numbers after correction.

When using a set of 1300 heads for a 1776, there is a lot of work to do unshrouding the valves for maximum flow, and porting/blending the ports to improve flow in and out of the head.
No need for massive ports, but there is still a lot to remove to improve flow enough, and should compliment the now 3 angle seats we have cut..
They will be finished with stainless valves, and uprated collets after final finishing etc.

Setting oil pressure control spring pressure to suit the cut seat, as it was a bit rough so we have had to cut it slightly, and using a long pressure relief valve, tested several springs to get the pressure where is should be on its seat..

Service and tune-up on @slate_grey_6401 Chesil #356 #porsche #Speedster on monday, including rejetting the carbs after securing the left hand manifold, the idle jets are not pleasant to get to at all lol.
It has also been on a rolling road before, it was left very rich..
Tappets were very tappy, about 3 times the gap that it should have had lol.

Volkswagen type 4 webcam camshaft instalation,
O.E cam gear removed from original.cam, skimmed and counter bored, then fitted with dome head screws for help clearing the oil pump.
End play on the thrust bearing then set.
Mechanical fuel pump oil feed and drain to sump tapped and blanked, this one will run an electric fuel pump.

Maching an as41 engine case, this was a type 3 case, so we have had to drill and tap for type 1 oil pressure switch location, and drill and insert a dip stick tube in the correct place..
We have milled back the area ready for tapping for full flow oil adaption.
8mm case savers have been installed, and we have step bored for 94mm cylinders, this is done to keep as much strength in the case bores as possible.

Test fit of this reground crankshaft into the freshly Linebored and thrust cut AS41 crankcase..
We have also remove oil galley plugs, drilled and tapped for him, an important part of any engine rebuild, especially when the case has been blasted, for thorough cleaning.
If this step wasn't carried out, some debris is sure to cling on somewhere and destroy a bearing or two in a short space of time!

Was standard on the mains, so line bored to .50mm but the rear was still rough (see pic) so had to line bore to 1mm to clean it up fully..
Nice and shiny, ready for the customer to give it a good clean, and build!
